3 Questions That Will Make You More Accountable
Ever wonder why some people seem to get more done?
You might have asked yourself, “Why is it easier for others to be so productive?”
I’ve been exploring this question lately, and learned a few things:
ADHD brains often have lower dopamine levels, which impacts both executive function and motivation, according to some studies.
Productivity and executive function go hand in hand.
People who consistently feel productive have something in common—a board of directors.
Number 3 stood out! This is the missing piece for many of us!
I’m not talking about a formal group in suits around a boardroom table. I mean a select group of people who support and push us to be our best.
A group who hold us accountable.
Accountability is a common missing piece for many clients. And, it's crucial for executive function and productivity.
When trying to hold oneself accountable, the most common mistakes I see are:
They try to go it alone.
They don’t know who is on their board of directors.
They don’t leverage each person properly.
Today, I will teach you how to build your board of directors and utilize it for greater productivity. Let's dive in.
Who is on My Board?
I intentionally surround myself with a powerful support system that boosts my productivity.
Each person on my board plays a unique and vital role:
Wife – Inspires me
Mom – Unwavering support
Dad – Keeps it real
Joe – Pushes me when I hesitate
Andrew – Someone I deeply trust
Sean – Business partner and guide
Greg – Life coach
My board of directors motivates, pushes, and inspires me. Whether I need a creative spark, a body double, or a kick in the pants, I always have someone to call.
3 Questions That Will Make You More Accountable
I crafted my board of directors in three steps:
Reflect
Connect
Leverage
Reflect
What are the key areas I need more support in?
Go deeper and ask yourself...
What challenges do I face most often?
Who in my life is best suited to help me overcome these challenges?
Who do I trust to be honest with me?
Who inspires and motivates me?
Who can I count on, no matter what?
Your board doesn’t have to be big. One reliable person can make a difference.
If you’re unsure where to start, think about professionals like an executive function coach or therapist who can fill in the gaps.
Connect
How can I connect with them on a meaningful level?
Support them just as they support you.
Spend intentional time together.
Show appreciation regularly—send a thoughtful text, a gratitude card, or express how much their support means to you.
Your board members are people too. They’ll need your help as much as you need theirs.
Leverage
How can I leverage their expertise?
Now that your board is in place, it’s time to put it to work.
Ask for support—a body double, workout partner, or someone to check in on your progress.
Share your big and small goals, and ask your board to hold you accountable.
Leverage their strengths—call on the right person for the right job.
Through intentional reflection, connection, and leverage of your board, your productivity will improve.
Now, It’s Your Turn
Your mission this week: start developing your board of directors.
Honestly, you, my friend, are the only reason I show up and write this newsletter every week.
You hold me accountable.
You motivate me.
You inspire me.
I hope you found this helpful. Thank you for being a reader!
